Adegbile Appointment

Debo P. Adegbile was nominated by President Obama to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. The actual title is Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. This nomination was first made November 18, 2013. It was returned to the president on January 3, 2014.

On January 6, 2014 the President re-nominated Adegbile. This past week the appointment made it to a vote in the senate. Several democratic senators broke ranks and voted against the appointment.

I give you this history because I want you to notice the nomination was returned, a fact I did not see reported by any news outlet. This could have served as a warning to the president, this nomination may not be the wisest choice. But our president is not accustomed to compromise or reconsidering his steps.

The issue behind the nomination was the manner in which Adegbile defended a case in Philadelphia. Wesley Cook, also known as Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted in 1982 for the first-degree murder of Daniel Faulkner, a Philadelphia police officer. I do not believe, as some have reported, the problem is merely that he defended the man, but rather the extreme measures taken above and beyond legal defense. Numerous letters describing the tactics used to turn the case into a cause celebre and slandering the Philadelphia Police Department were turned into the appropriate committee. But the one written by R. Seth Williams, Philadelphia District Attorney is sufficient to understand the case. After reading this and other letters, after researching the cases and individuals described above, I wonder why President Obama felt the need continue pursuing this nomination.

But above that question is the concern for what will happen next. It seems very likely we will see a recess appointment of the same person. If this recess appointment is made, it will be an insult to the city of Philadelphia, and to Law Enforcement Officers all over the country.

  1. Charles, thanks for your post. My stomach turns over some of the ridiculous and offensive actions that are taking place in our government. Praying and trusting that God will one more time send an outpouring of His Spirit to our nation and bring true revival. God bless you.

  2. My comment posted this time. Still learning. I will try to comment on other posts as well. Hope your wife is ok. God bless you. In Christ, Elaine O’Neill
